Christmas 2013

It's our first snow day today!  Not our first snow but our first day off from school.  Maria's school cancelled for today and tomorrow last night-unheard of!  The girls are watching "The Magic School Bus" DVDs Maria got for Christmas and I get a few peaceful moments away from the paper scraps and glitter glue of our snowflake project.  We've had a wonderful vacation!  Christmas was on a Wednesday this year so the girls and I had a few days at home before going up to Jefferson.  We arrived in Jefferson on the morning of Christmas Eve during a power outage.  While we had gotten rain the previous day ice had coated all of the trees causing them to bend or break and wreak havoc on the power lines.  There's no better place to be during a power outage than Bodge Hill!
Christmas Eve was adventurous.  Maria headed out on her new skis with Paul.  Dad groomed the crusty hills with his tractor and created a perfect slope we named "Chickadee Slope" because it ended beside the bird feeder.

Stella slipped on the ice and got a buckle fracture in her right wrist although we didn't find that out until the following Monday, and Dad had a minor dizzy episode that send us all into a tizzy of concern.  Fortunately everyone turned out okay and although tired, was present for Christmas morning.
Some of the gifts that stand out are the vanilla extract made by Paul and Maria, Tina's terrarium, made by us and Mom's Christmas tree skirts.

On Thanksgiving we had decided to have soups and sandwiches for Christmas dinner, keep it simple.  Good thing that's what we planned because soup is the perfect thing to cook on the wood stove.  Turkey and dumpling, made with the carcass from the Thanksgiving turkey, so good!

Christmas night we went to Kim and Rusty's to watch Stella's new Tinker Bell movie since Mom and Dad didn't have power.  Mom and Dad did get power as we were leaving, Kim and Rusty lost it briefly when we got there.

The day after Christmas we got to visit with the Gagnons twice in one day.  First we met up for sledding at JVS,

then we went to the McCabe's for dinner.  Thanks to another snow storm Gwen and Carrie didn't make it.
