Dirt under my fingernails

This afternoon I took Maria into Exeter hoping a change of scenery would distract her from her runny nose. We copped a squat in a little park and swung on the swings, changed her diaper under this tree...

watched kids get off the school bus, a cat prowl in the hedges, the ice cream man circle, a car get washed and a game of catch. Then Maria found the grass and started yanking it out by the fistful almost toppling herself backwards with the effort. We talked about how grass is not people food as I pulled it out from between her fingers, same with the twigs and the earthworm.

After we tired of that park we walked down to the parkway in time to watch crew practice.
